This is a Reeves Gem watercolour box and was intended as a competitor to the Winsor Newton Bijou box.
This particular box still has its original cardboard box which is very unusual and great to have.
The box is in very fine condition but I have wondered if the inside of the lid has been repainted. The only reason I say this is to be honest of course but also because it looks very good. There are the usual scars as this is a very old item but really very nice and quite useable.
Judging from the state of the original paints I doubt if it’s had much use.I think if it had the paper label to the centre would have gotten dirty or lost long ago.
These slim boxes are perfect for the pocket and give the artist a lot of freedom and of course opportunities. This particular box has survived very well and could be put back to use immediately.
The box opens and closes as it should and I struggle to say anything negative about it.
It is a great box by a very famous maker in very good condition considering that it was probably made in the 1920s or before.
I consider it a rare box especially with its original box and quite sweet!
