This is an excellent example of one of the beautiful and very popular watercolour boxes that the great Reeves of London made. In my opinion it was made around 1910.
The standout feature of this particular one is not the fact that it is beautiful but that it is the most complete one that I’ve come across.
You will see that it has its lovely original ceramic palette fully stamped by the makers and this palette is in wonderful condition with no cracks.
The original water bowl is present and again in superb condition. Both of these items are very often liberated from boxes as they are very desirable and valuable. Happily both are here.
The box also has what could easily be its original pins used to position the work piece. They are also placed in their correct position in the box.
Both labels are also present and in good order which again is unusual.
It appears to also have all of its original paints and these are in the very desirable ceramic pans.
Inside can also be found the spring clips that are used to affix your work piece to a drawing board. Once again this is very unusual.
There is a pencil and sharpener also and I’d not be surprised if the sharpener is original.
There are some not very special brushes but they could also be original the wash brush is certainly old.
This box also has its original lock and key and rather unusually this lock works extremely well.
In condition the box is very good and is made from the kind of Mahogany that Winsor and Newton used for their very expensive boxes.
I can find no cracks in the wood and it appears extremely sound.
Of course it has its share of bumps and dings just as any box of this period that has been used would have. That said they are in no way bad or distracting in my opinion from what is a lovely box.
The hinges work well also.
In size it is big enough to be used in the studio but of a size that still makes it quite portable and it was intended to be so.
I wonder how many gentle murmuring streams this box has been laid aside whilst the artist carefully worked away lost to time with the scene and this charming companion of a box.
I have clients who use these lovely wooden boxes outdoors instead of the more common metal boxes. These boxes do look very nice against the green of the grass and the blue of the sky.
As I’m sure you are aware these ceramic pans found in this box are in fact a great idea in that when the paint is used up they can easily be washed and refilled with your own choice of colours.
They really add to the usefulness of this box. In truth in terms of usefulness this box is equally useful to a box costing four times the amount.
All in all this is rare example being so complete and in such useable condition.
It will I think be a good while before we see one to match it.
