This is a rare and lovely metal watercolour box by the justly famous Charles Roberson of London that is in good condition.
I suspect the box was constructed in the 1920s to 1930s and as usual with Mr Roberson’s boxes it is made very well. One might maybe impolitely say like a tank!
The box is also mechanically good in that it opens and closes as it should with good hinges present.
The outer paint has the usual knocks and scrapes and perhaps one very minor dent on top but it is in remarkable condition for its age.
Internally the paint which is original is even better and was clearly looked after.
There is a full set, bar one, of Reeves, largely unwrapped ceramic pans. These I’m sure will work admirably. I imagine the originals were used and discarded long ago but at least it has no modern plastic pans present.
These are not the Reeves paints that you maybe familiar with used for education but are artist quality paint and I can testify that these types of paints are very good. Certainly the ones that I’ve been fortunate enough to use in my work as a conservator within Museums.
The box is of a useful size also, big enough to be comfortable in the studio and small enough to slip into a pocket.
It is a good and rare paint box and will last a lifetime if looked after.
