As I’m sure you can see from the pictures this is a lovely tiny watercolour box by the very famous London company Reeves. I would guess that it is Edwardian in date so it has seen many warm summers and lots of frosty mornings.
The firm of Reeves is not only justly famous but is one of the oldest businesses that supplied artist equipment. They were instrumental in taking watercolour to the next level so to speak. Before the revolutionary paints invented by this business in the 18th century and very probably by William Reeves in particular watercolour paint was considerably less easy to use. The paint before had been something very hard in nature. Pieces needed to be broken off and what was termed rubbed up. This meant rubbing the paint against the ceramic mixing surface. If we remember that in those times watercolour painting was actually a part of a young ladies education, at least it was for those whose parents could afford it. So I imagine breaking rock hard paint block’s could not have been very easy in young hands.
The great Mr Reeves cured this by mixing in some of the newly acquired Glycerin which makes paint moist and so softer. He could and maybe did use Honey. Modern watercolour paints use both ingredients today so Mr Reeves really did open the door to the modern era in this respect.
The Reeves family running the business in the early 20th century designed this box to be small and affordable and It really is petite and would easily fit into a handbag of reasonable size or a coat pocket. This of course makes it very portable and a great accompaniment to these lovely spring days in the Sun.
Whether sitting by a gently burbling stream that talks of its journey to who knows where or resting in a woodland glade with the dappled light dancing through the newly opened leaves or maybe even walking through an urban scene full of activity life and colour this little gem will serve you well.
It is in very good condition considering it’s age and is very well equipped. Unusually for this type of box the wood used for its top is a figured piece with lovely rich grain. Most times we find a sound but fairly plain top so this definitely is a plus. In truth this box is a little beauty!
It has a full set of ceramic pans by the makers and are stamped underneath that can of course be refilled when used up with tube paints of your choice. I can’t say that these definitely came with the box but they are by Reeves and contemporary with the box in my opinion. This also has a tube of Ivory Black again by the makers which my need the addition of a drop or two of water to bring it to life. I see no reason as to why all of these paints shouldn’t spring back to life with water. Reeves made good quality paints.
Both labels are also present as you can see and are in good condition.
All in all this is a great little box that has virtually all that is needed to create some beautiful work.
