This is a hardly used full ceramic pan of Genuine Vermilion by the very famous makers, Rowney of London.
This maker was one of the early makers in London and rightly had a great reputation. This particular pan dates from around 1890 and has some very fine Vermilion pigment.
Rowney colours were very good just as their other products were.
This is a particularly rich reddish colour and in looking at it one can see this colours great possibilities in flesh tones just as the great masters did.
Vermilion like this is a rare treat in my opinion and so in the hope that you too also appreciate it I offer it here.
This pigment should be handled with care as it one of the toxic ones but in my opinion what is needed is a good slice of common sense.
There are supposed to be modern equivalents but I have never been convinced and in fact at least one of the bigger oil paint manufacturers re introduced it recently. It is however not as rich as this, at least the tube I saw wasn’t.
I would like to think that if you choose this one you will not be disappointed.
