This Antique Winsor Newton Paint Box is in very nice condition considering its age.
This is strictly speaking one of the paint boxes that reflects the Victorian interest in the Gothic. With the great Mr Pugin at its head the Gothic revival quickly gained ground and won many hearts.
I confess that I have sympathies for its intentions and of course some of the art that this movement produced and influenced is simply stunning.
I must also confess to being a fan of Ruskin.
This particular box is one of the smaller types that fit so well into the modern home and studio.
The box is in good condition considering it dates from around 1850 to 1860.
It has had a life and was obviously much loved. The glorious label is good and bright but does show some areas that have been touched up just a little. As I said it has had a life.
However it has all of its original paints surprisingly still with their cover. The wonderful signed mixing tray/palette is also present.
There is also a small packet of powdered gold leaf which is probably original also.
Externally the box is good and strong and with a working lock with a key. The Mahogany used to construct the box is very fine and rich in colour.
This box is a real stunner and is nice just to have around. In fact with the lid open it looks great just about anywhere.
Approx, 23.5 x 14 x 3.5 cm
Please note that the larger 17th century artist box underneath the Winsor Newton box is not included.
