This Antique Winsor Newton Paint Box is in very nice condition considering its age.
Over the past forty years I have both collected and sold such items and a number were in fact dated. All of the dated ones were from the 1860s and I suggest that this also was made in that period that we call Victorian.
On opening the box we are greeted by the beautiful original blue and gold label which is worn justifiably proudly and exhibits the makers name and address together with their Royal Warrant,This pride all helps to reflect the confidence of the Victorian age.
As we can see there is a fine array of contemporary and relevant items displayed.
For example there is a fine collection of genuine Victorian paints many of which were made by Winsor Newton. These paints are as useable today as the day they were made and would still produce the fine colours that the makers were and are so famous for.
There is as you can see also a porcelain mixing tray /palette which is unmarked.
Interestingly there is also a lovely port crayon holder that is so fine as to suggest that this boxes original owner might have been a young lady. Indeed many young ladies of the period were quite accomplished artists having been taught how to draw and paint as part of their education.
In the lower drawer which is held closed by a brass pin there are two very nice mixing bowls.
A key which though is not original does work the lock though personally I would not trust it too far! These old locks can be sometimes a bit temperamental!
Although Winsor and Newton still make fine paints I personally don’t think they make boxes that even get close to this level of quality. In fact whether or not this is used it is a joy to have it displayed in one’s home.
All in all this is a lovely thing.
