This box is a genuinely early box and was probably made about the same time that evil Jack was stalking London.
Winsor and Newton patented their idea for little spring clips at this time which served to hold the pans in place.
They did and do work rather well and as testimony to the metal working skills employed all the little clips are present and working fine.
The pans here are all ceramic by the makers and stamped underneath as should be.
Being a Victorian box we should expect to see some evidence of artists of the past and this does show some paint loss to the palettes but make no mistake this is very much a working box just as much as the day it was made.
It is like many of the early boxes made from a very thick metal that if looked after will Easily last another hundred years.
It has also a good metal label still in place which identifies the model and maker. The box opens and closes as it should and the hinges are also fine.
