This is a genuinely rare antique watercolour paint box by the great Winsor and Newton of London. It was made in my opinion in the peak period for this company around 1890 to 1900.
What makes this box so special, is that it is set up for large pans and all of its original pains are present. These are of course ceramic and although one has a repaired crack, they will if looked after last a lifetime. It is an easy matter to wash these out when empty and refill with a tube colour of your choice.
You will also notice that the box is designed for the more serious painter in that the user is not bombarded with far too many colours. In fact, there is not much that isn’t paintable with just a few colours so once again the special nature of this box is emphasised.
This is a box in very good, strong condition and properly labelled. There is also a lovely contemporary Sable brush present. A lovely box indeed.
